What should you know about minor burn blister treatment?

A burn blister forms when heat damages the upper layers of skin and fluid collects beneath the surface. The intact skin can shield the tender tissue underneath. Size, depth, location and cause all affect the care needed; a burn on the face, hand, foot, genitals or across a joint deserves particular caution.

Pain, redness and swelling can occur at first. A blister that breaks can become an open wound, so cleanliness and protection matter. The depth of a burn can be difficult to judge at home.

Move away from the heat source and remove jewellery or tight clothing near the injury before swelling develops, unless material is stuck to the skin. Cool the burn under clean, cool running water for a prolonged period; avoid ice, butter, oils and adhesive products directly on the wound. Do not pop the blister.

Cover the area loosely with a Sterile Wound Dressing and keep it clean and dry. If the blister opens, do not peel away attached skin; rinse gently, cover it and arrange advice about Wound Care and Dressing. Use pain relief only if it is suitable for you and follow the label.

Seek urgent assessment for a large, deep, white, charred or numb burn; an electrical or chemical burn; smoke inhalation; severe pain; or a burn involving the face, airway, hands, feet, genitals or a major joint. Arrange review if redness spreads, warmth and swelling increase, pus appears, fever develops or the wound is not healing.

Ask whether the blister should remain covered, which dressing suits its location, how often to change it and whether you need a tetanus assessment or prescription treatment.
