Minocycline skin rash: what to know

A drug rash can appear as red or darker patches, small raised spots, itching, or widespread irritation after starting minocycline. The appearance alone cannot show whether the reaction is mild or more serious. A clinician may ask when the medicine began, whether the dose changed, and whether other medicines or products were introduced. Other conditions, including contact dermatitis, heat rash, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, and atopic dermatitis, can look similar.

Note when the rash began, where it started, how it has spread, and any accompanying symptoms. Photographing the changes can help the prescriber. Do not restart, share, or substitute minocycline without medical guidance. Avoid new fragranced products and gentle cleansing may reduce irritation while you arrange advice. Keep a list of every medicine, supplement, and skincare product you use.

Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, sores in the mouth or eyes, severe weakness, or a rapidly spreading rash. Fever, facial swelling, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine also needs urgent medical assessment. A mild-looking rash still deserves prompt contact with the prescriber because reactions can change.

Ask whether the rash could be related to minocycline, whether another treatment is needed, and what symptoms should change your urgency. Confirm which dose to take or avoid, how the reaction should be recorded, and whether you need follow-up if the skin does not settle.
