What should you know about mini otoscope?

The device usually has a light, a viewing lens or camera, and a small tip that sits at the entrance to the ear canal. It may help you see wax, redness, swelling, discharge, or a foreign object. A clear image does not prove that the ear is healthy: wax, a narrow canal, movement, or poor lighting can hide the eardrum. Ear pain can also come from problems that are not visible with a home device.

Follow the device instructions and use a clean, suitable tip. Look only at the outer canal; never push the tip into the ear, scrape wax, or try to remove an object. Do not share an uncleaned device. Children may move suddenly, so a suspected ear problem is better assessed during a Child Health Consultation. For persistent pain, hearing change, or discharge, arrange a GP Consultation and take any image only as supporting information.

Seek prompt medical help for severe or worsening ear pain, blood or pus, sudden hearing loss, marked dizziness, facial weakness, or an object stuck in the ear. Fever or a child who is unusually sleepy, distressed, or difficult to settle also warrants medical assessment. Do not delay care while trying to obtain a better home image.

Ask whether the eardrum was visible, whether wax or infection explains the symptoms, and whether hearing should be checked. You can also ask which ear-care steps are safe and when review is needed.
