Short answer

To support low milk supply, improve effective milk removal, check latch and feeding frequency, and confirm the baby is receiving enough milk with a clinician.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main principle
Regular, effective milk removal is the key signal that supports production.
Best assessment
An observed feed plus output and growth gives more information than pump volume alone.

Why supply can change

Milk production responds to milk removal. If feeds are missed, shortened, painful, or replaced without expressing, the body may receive less stimulation. A shallow latch, tongue movement difficulty, pump-fit problem, or scheduled feeds can also reduce milk transfer. Meanwhile, frequent feeding can be normal and does not automatically show that supply is inadequate.

The clearest assessment combines an observed feed with the baby’s wet nappies, behavior, and growth. Pumped volume and breast fullness are useful pieces of information but cannot answer the whole question alone.

Steps that may help

Offer the breast at early hunger cues and let the baby remain on the first side while actively swallowing before offering the other. Keep skin-to-skin contact if it helps the baby settle. If a feed is replaced, express around that time. Avoid starting herbs, medicines, or restrictive diets without medical advice, because they may have side effects or distract from the cause.

A lactation consultant can watch a feed, assess milk transfer, and create a feeding or expressing plan. The Lactation Consultation service is one option for this support.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt review if the baby is hard to wake, has fewer wet nappies, remains hungry after many feeds, or is not gaining as expected. Seek care for breast redness with fever, severe pain, or a worsening tender area. Urgent help is needed for a very weak baby, breathing trouble, or signs of dehydration.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Is milk transfer adequate? Is there a latch, oral, hormonal, or medication issue? Should I express after feeds, and for how long? Is supplementation needed while we investigate? How should we follow the baby’s growth?

Questions people ask

Do lactation cookies or drinks reliably increase supply?

They are not a substitute for checking latch and milk removal, and ingredients can have unwanted effects; ask a clinician before using them.

How quickly should I expect a change?

The response varies with the cause, so a feeding assessment helps set a realistic plan and monitoring schedule.
