What should you know about milk fever in dogs?

Milk fever in dogs is commonly called eclampsia or puerperal tetany. It can occur when a nursing mother cannot keep up with calcium demands, often after giving birth. Early signs may include restlessness, panting, whining, stiff walking, trembling, or reluctance to let puppies nurse. Muscle spasms, fever, weakness, disorientation, and seizures can follow. The condition is not the same as an ordinary infection causing a high temperature.

Remove the puppies from nursing and contact an emergency veterinarian immediately. Keep the mother quiet and prevent falls or overheating while transporting her. Do not give calcium tablets, dairy products, or human medicines unless a veterinarian directs you; the dose and route need careful control, particularly if tremors or seizures are present. The puppies may need temporary feeding support while the mother is treated.

Panting with stiffness, tremors, inability to walk, severe agitation, collapse, or a seizure warrants emergency care without waiting to see whether it settles. Tell the veterinarian when the puppies were born, how many are nursing, and whether the mother has eaten, vomited, or received supplements. Similar signs can have other causes, so examination is essential.

Ask how to separate and feed the puppies safely, how calcium will be monitored, and when nursing can resume. Discuss a prevention plan for later litters, including diet, supplements, and early signs to watch for.
