Milk allergy foods to avoid

Short answer
If you have a milk allergy, avoid milk and products containing milk proteins, and check every label for less obvious ingredients.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may contain milk
Milk can appear in obvious foods such as cream, butter, cheese, yoghurt, ice cream and milk-based sauces. It may also be present in baked goods, chocolate, processed meats, instant meals and some medicines or supplements. Ingredient names can include casein, whey, milk solids, milk powder, lactose and ghee. Lactose-free products are not automatically safe because they may still contain milk proteins. Goat and sheep milk can also trigger reactions in someone allergic to cow's milk.
A food label may warn that a product contains milk or was made where milk is handled. Take that warning seriously, including when the product is familiar. An allergy is different from lactose intolerance: intolerance mainly affects digestion, while milk allergy involves an immune response. Learn more about [Food Allergy](/conditions/food-allergy/).
How to reduce accidental exposure
Read the full ingredient list each time you buy a product, since recipes can change. Use separate utensils, chopping boards and storage areas when preparing food for someone with an allergy. Ask restaurants about sauces, marinades, shared cooking surfaces and cross-contact. Do not rely on smell or appearance to judge whether food is safe. A clinician can help confirm the trigger through [Allergy Testing](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/allergy-testing/).
Keep a written list of avoided ingredients and tell family members, schools and caregivers what to check. If a previous reaction involved breathing difficulty, throat symptoms or collapse, ask your clinician for a personalised emergency plan. An itchy throat can be an early warning sign; read about [Itchy Throat](/symptoms/itchy-throat/).
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, repeated vomiting, widespread hives with weakness, dizziness, fainting or sudden confusion after eating. These can be signs of [Anaphylaxis](/conditions/anaphylaxis/). If an adrenaline auto-injector has been prescribed, use it according to your emergency plan and call emergency services. Do not wait to see whether symptoms settle.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which ingredients and warning labels you should avoid, whether you need an emergency plan, how to use prescribed emergency medicine, and how to maintain balanced nutrition without milk. Ask whether a dietitian referral or supervised assessment is appropriate.

Questions people ask
Can I eat lactose-free food with a milk allergy?
Not necessarily. Lactose-free food may still contain milk proteins, so check the ingredient list and allergy warning.
Is baked milk safe for everyone with milk allergy?
No. Tolerance varies, and baked milk should only be introduced if a qualified clinician recommends a supervised plan.
