Milia and dry skin: what to know

Milia tend to look like firm, pearly white or skin-coloured bumps beneath the surface. They are not the same as flakes, rough patches, or a lack of water in the outer skin layer. Dryness can cause tightness, scaling, stinging, or fine cracks, and rubbing those areas may irritate nearby milia. Dry skin may occur with conditions such as asteatotic eczema, atopic dermatitis, or psoriasis, so the surrounding pattern matters.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Apply an emollient soon after washing to soften rough skin; choose a lighter product around the eyes if heavy textures bother you. Do not squeeze, scrape, or use abrasive home tools on a bump. A clinician can confirm whether a spot is milia and discuss safe removal or a suitable topical treatment, especially on delicate facial skin.

Arrange a dermatology review if bumps are changing, bleeding, painful, inflamed, spreading quickly, or affecting vision. Seek advice for dryness that cracks, oozes, becomes very itchy, or does not settle with gentle moisturising. Diagnosis is useful when a white bump is uncertain because several conditions can resemble milia.

Ask whether the roughness is simple dry skin or an underlying eczema pattern, whether the bump is truly milia, and which moisturiser or procedure is appropriate for its location.
