What should you know about milia and keratosis pilaris?

Short answer
Milia and keratosis pilaris are different bump conditions: milia are trapped keratin cysts, while keratosis pilaris involves plugs around hair follicles.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Milia feel
- Smooth and firm
- Keratosis pilaris feels
- Rough around follicles
- Shared rule
- Avoid squeezing
How they differ
Milia are usually smooth, firm, white or pearly bumps that sit just below the surface, often on the eyelids, cheeks, or other facial areas. Keratosis pilaris commonly feels rough and may look like fine gooseflesh on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. It forms around hair follicles and can be skin-coloured, pink, or inflamed. Neither description is enough to diagnose every bump: acne, folliculitis, ingrown hairs, and other lesions can overlap in appearance. Location and texture are useful clues, not a reason to pick or scrape the skin.
Care that may help
For keratosis pilaris, apply a bland moisturiser regularly and consider Emollient Therapy to soften roughness. A clinician may suggest Topical Retinoids or another exfoliating product, introduced gradually because irritation can make redness more noticeable. Chemical Peel may be considered for selected cases. Milia should not be squeezed; a trained clinician can confirm them and remove them using an appropriate technique. Laser Hair Removal is a separate option when unwanted hair or repeated follicle irritation contributes to a different concern, not a general treatment for every white bump.
When to seek care
Arrange a review when bumps are painful, pus-filled, rapidly changing, bleeding, intensely itchy, or leaving scars. Seek advice if a rash spreads, if home products cause burning, or if you cannot tell whether the bumps are milia, keratosis pilaris, or ingrown hairs. Prompt assessment is especially sensible for a new lesion near the eye or one that affects vision.
Questions for your doctor
Which condition fits the location and texture? Should I use an emollient, retinoid, or another product? How long should I try it, and what signs mean I should stop?

Questions people ask
Can keratosis pilaris turn into milia?
No. They are separate processes, although one person can have both and notice them at the same time.
Does exfoliating remove milia?
Scrubbing usually does not safely remove milia and may irritate the skin. A clinician should confirm and treat persistent bumps.
