What should you know about mild sunburn treatment?

Sunburn is an inflammatory response to ultraviolet injury. The skin may be red, warm, tender, tight, or itchy, with peeling later as the surface renews. A few blisters change the care needed because they signal deeper damage. Treatment supports the skin barrier and comfort; it does not remove the underlying injury instantly. Ongoing or repeated exposure can add to sun-damaged skin over time, so recovery and prevention belong together.

Cool the skin with a damp cloth or cool shower, avoiding ice and very hot water. Apply a bland fragrance-free emollient while the skin is damp, repeating when it feels dry. Rest, drink fluids, and use an over-the-counter pain medicine only if it is suitable for you and taken as directed. Keep sunburn covered with loose clothing and remain in shade. Do not scrub, pick peeling skin, or open blisters. Ask a clinician before applying topical corticosteroids, especially to the face or broken skin.

Seek urgent care for widespread blistering, severe pain, facial or eye swelling, breathing difficulty, fever with marked illness, confusion, faintness, repeated vomiting, or difficulty drinking. Contact a clinician if redness spreads, drainage or increasing warmth suggests infection, eye symptoms appear, or the burn is not improving.
