What should you know about a mild sunburn on the face?

Ultraviolet light injures the outer skin, causing inflammation. Facial skin may feel hot, tight, sore, or itchy, and redness can be easier to see. Peeling may follow as damaged surface cells shed. Small blisters indicate deeper injury and should be protected rather than opened. Sunburn is different from long-term sun-damaged skin, although repeated exposure can contribute to photoaging. Cosmetics, exfoliants, and fragranced products may sting while the barrier is unsettled.

Use cool, damp compresses and rinse with lukewarm or cool water; avoid ice directly on the skin. Apply a simple fragrance-free moisturiser or emollient while the skin is slightly damp. Drink fluids, avoid picking or peeling, and pause retinoids, acids, scrubs, and hot treatments until comfortable. Stay out of direct sun and use a wide-brimmed hat. A clinician may advise a topical corticosteroid for selected inflammation, but facial steroid use requires professional guidance.

Seek urgent care for facial swelling that affects the eyes or breathing, extensive blisters, severe pain, fever, confusion, faintness, vomiting, or inability to drink. Arrange medical advice if redness worsens, the skin becomes infected-looking, eye pain develops, or symptoms do not begin settling. Do not burst blisters; cover them gently if they break.
