What should you know about a mild sun poisoning rash?

Sun poisoning is a non-specific term often used for a stronger sun reaction. A rash may appear on sun-exposed skin as red patches, small bumps, blisters, or intense itch. Heat, sweat, a new product, a medicine that increases light sensitivity, or conditions such as atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis can look similar. The timing, distribution, scaling, and whether other people are affected help distinguish possibilities. A rash after sun exposure does not by itself identify one diagnosis.

Move out of direct sun, wear loose covering clothing, and use shade while the skin settles. Cool damp compresses can soothe itch or warmth. Keep the area clean, avoid scratching, and pause new fragranced products. Drink fluids if you feel overheated. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on an appropriate anti-itch product after considering your age, medicines, and skin condition. If the rash recurs, record sun exposure, products, and medicines to share at review.

Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing trouble, faintness, confusion, repeated vomiting, widespread blistering, severe pain, fever, or signs of dehydration. Arrange a dermatology review if the rash persists away from sun, spreads, becomes scaly or ring-shaped, affects sleep, or returns after modest exposure.
