What should you know about mild pins and needles in hands?

Mild pins and needles in the hands often follow temporary nerve pressure, but recurring symptoms need assessment. The sensation may feel prickly, burning, numb or electric and may improve after changing position and moving the hand.

Pressure at the wrist, elbow or neck can irritate a nerve. Fast breathing during anxiety or panic can also produce tingling around the hands or mouth. Persistent symptoms may be associated with peripheral neuropathy, type 2 diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency or an underactive thyroid. The location, timing, both-sided or one-sided pattern, and any weakness help a clinician narrow the cause.

Release pressure, change position and gently move the fingers when tingling follows sleep or leaning on an arm. Note when it starts, how long it lasts, which fingers are affected, and whether neck pain or weakness occurs. Avoid repeatedly bending the wrist if that brings symptoms on. Book a routine appointment if the sensation keeps returning, persists, spreads, or affects grip; do not start supplements without checking the reason first.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden one-sided numbness or weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, new confusion, severe dizziness, or a sudden severe headache, as these can signal a stroke or transient ischaemic attack. Seek urgent help for rapidly progressive weakness, loss of balance, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
