What should you know about mild fever and rash?

A rash may be flat, raised, itchy, blistered, or painful. Chickenpox can present with an itchy rash that changes into fluid-filled spots, while a viral respiratory illness may cause fever with more general skin changes. Cellulitis presents with a painful, warm, swollen area of skin and needs medical attention. The rash pattern does not diagnose its cause by itself.

Record where the rash started, whether it is spreading, and whether new medicines, foods, travel, or contact with an unwell person came before it. Avoid scratching and do not share towels if an infection is possible.

Offer fluids and rest, keep clothing loose, and use gentle, fragrance-free skin care. A cool compress may ease itching. Ask a pharmacist before using an antihistamine or fever medicine, particularly for a young child, pregnancy, or long-term illness. Do not burst blisters. Until the cause is clearer, limit close contact with people who are pregnant, very young, or immunocompromised if the rash looks infectious.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, confusion, a stiff neck, seizure, severe drowsiness, or purple spots that do not fade when pressed. Prompt assessment is also needed when the rash is rapidly spreading, very painful, blistering widely, or accompanied by a person who appears seriously unwell. A baby with fever and rash should be assessed promptly.
