Mild fetal growth restriction

A scan estimates the baby's size and checks growth over time, fluid around the baby and blood flow through the placenta and cord. Some babies are naturally small and healthy; others grow more slowly because the placenta, pregnancy health or another factor is affecting growth. One measurement does not give the whole picture.

Your maternity team may compare scans, check your blood pressure and ask about movements. The plan depends on gestational age, growth pattern, blood flow and the baby's wellbeing.

Attend scheduled appointments and scans, and learn your maternity service's advice about monitoring movements. A growth scan can measure the baby and assess fluid and blood flow. Fetal heart monitoring may be used when the team wants a closer check of the baby's current wellbeing.

Take prescribed medicines, attend blood-pressure checks and tell the team about reduced movements or new symptoms. Do not start supplements or change activity as a treatment unless your clinician advises it.

Contact your maternity unit immediately if your baby's movements are reduced or changed from the usual pattern, or if you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, visual changes or sudden swelling. These symptoms need assessment regardless of the scan result.

Your team may recommend closer monitoring or birth planning. Induction of labour may be discussed when the benefits of delivery outweigh continuing the pregnancy; the timing is individual.

Ask how the baby's measurements compare with earlier scans, whether blood flow and fluid are reassuring, and when the next growth scan or heart monitoring is planned. Ask which movement changes require an immediate call and how birth timing will be decided.
