What should you know about mild erythema nodosum?

The lumps form in the deeper layer of skin rather than as a surface rash. They may feel bruised or sore, can change colour as they settle, and often improve gradually. Erythema nodosum can occur after an infection, with some medicines, or alongside an inflammatory illness. The skin finding alone does not identify the cause, so a clinician may ask about recent illness, new medicines, joint symptoms, bowel symptoms, and other changes.

Resting the legs, raising them when comfortable, and using a cool compress may ease tenderness. Choose loose clothing and avoid pressing or massaging the lumps. Do not start, stop, or reuse prescription medicine without advice. If symptoms are troublesome or the cause is unclear, arrange a dermatology or primary-care assessment; treatment is directed at the trigger and discomfort. Oral corticosteroid treatment may be considered in selected situations after an infection and other causes have been assessed.

Arrange prompt medical care if the lumps are rapidly spreading, pain is severe, walking is difficult, or you feel markedly unwell. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, or a rapidly worsening allergic-type reaction. A fever, new joint swelling, persistent abdominal symptoms, or sores elsewhere can help a clinician find an underlying illness and should be reported.

Ask whether the appearance fits erythema nodosum, whether a recent infection or medicine could be relevant, and which symptoms would change the urgency. You can also ask how long monitoring is reasonable, what pain relief is suitable for you, and when corticosteroid treatment would be considered.
