Mild Eczema Around the Nose: What to Know

Atopic dermatitis around the nose may appear as dryness, redness, fine scale, itching, or small cracks beside the nostrils. Cold air, frequent wiping, fragranced products, cosmetics, saliva, and nasal discharge can weaken the skin barrier. Scratching can cause crusting or temporary darkening after inflammation settles. Eczema around the nose can resemble contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, or an infection, so the appearance and history matter.

Cleanse with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free gentle cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Apply a bland moisturiser to slightly damp skin and reapply after wiping the nose. Avoid fragranced creams, exfoliants, essential oils, and picking flakes. Use only a treatment recommended for the face, because skin near the eyes and nostrils is sensitive. If a prescribed cream causes burning, swelling, or worsening redness, stop and seek advice about an alternative.

Arrange a review if the rash repeatedly returns, spreads, disrupts sleep, or does not improve with gentle care. Seek prompt advice for yellow crusting, pus, increasing warmth, swelling, pain, or rapidly spreading redness, which can suggest infection. Urgent assessment is appropriate for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or tongue.
