The short answer

A mild case of food poisoning is usually managed with frequent fluids, gentle foods and close attention to dehydration or worsening symptoms. Symptoms can include Diarrhoea, Nausea, Vomiting, Abdominal Pain and sometimes Fever. Rest, handwashing and avoiding food preparation for others can reduce spread while your gut settles.

What is happening

Food poisoning follows swallowing food or drink contaminated with germs or their toxins. The illness may affect one person or several people who ate the same meal. Vomiting and diarrhoea remove fluid and salts, so thirst, dry mouth, darker urine, dizziness or reduced urination can signal dehydration. The timing and combination of symptoms vary with the cause.

Most mild episodes improve with supportive care. Antibiotics are not suitable for every cause, and anti-diarrhoeal medicines may be unsafe in some situations, especially with blood in stool or Fever.

Replacing fluids

Take frequent small sips of water, broth or an Oral Rehydration Therapy solution. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart with tiny sips. Eat when able, choosing simple foods such as rice, bread, soup or bananas; avoid alcohol and very rich foods until you feel better. Wash hands with soap, clean bathroom surfaces and keep separate towels if possible.

A pharmacist can advise on suitable symptom relief, taking your age, pregnancy, medical conditions and regular medicines into account. Do not prepare food for others while actively vomiting or having diarrhoea.

Warning signs

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood or black stool, vomit that looks bloody or like coffee grounds, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange medical advice for persistent Fever, symptoms after high-risk travel, illness in a baby or frail older adult, or diarrhoea that does not begin to improve. IV Fluid Therapy may be needed when oral replacement is not enough.

Questions to ask

Ask how much Oral Rehydration Therapy to take, which foods and medicines suit you, and whether testing is needed if others became ill after the same meal. Mention recent travel, pregnancy, long-term conditions, blood in stool and any medicine you already used.
