What should you know about midline glioma H3 K27M?

Midline refers to structures near the centre of the brain, such as the thalamus or brainstem. Glioma describes a tumour arising from supporting cells in the nervous system. H3 K27M is a molecular alteration found in tumour cells; it helps specialists classify the tumour and discuss its expected behaviour. Symptoms depend on the exact location and may include weakness, changes in balance, difficulty speaking, altered sensation, headaches, nausea or changes in alertness. These symptoms can also have non-cancer causes.

A neuro-oncology team may review neurological findings, brain imaging and tissue testing when a biopsy is safe and appropriate. Ask how the tumour location affects biopsy or surgery decisions, and whether the H3 K27M result was confirmed by the laboratory. Treatment may include radiotherapy, symptom medicines, rehabilitation and, in selected situations, surgery. Seek emergency help for a seizure lasting longer than expected, repeated seizures without recovery, sudden severe weakness, new trouble speaking, loss of consciousness, severe confusion, or difficulty breathing. Contact the treating team promptly for a new or worsening headache, repeated vomiting, increasing sleepiness, a new balance problem or a noticeable change in strength or vision. Do not drive if a seizure, fainting episode or major neurological change has occurred.
