MGUS medicine: is treatment needed?

MGUS describes an abnormal antibody protein without evidence that it is harming organs. A drug is therefore not automatically prescribed for the laboratory finding. Medicines used for multiple myeloma are different from routine MGUS care and should not be taken without a specialist’s recommendation.

Your clinician may still treat another condition, such as anaemia, infection, bone pain or kidney disease, if it is present. Tell the team about prescriptions, over-the-counter products and supplements, especially medicines that can affect kidney function or bleeding.

Keep scheduled appointments and complete the blood or urine tests requested. Bring an up-to-date medicine list and mention changes in energy, infections, pain, urination or weight. Ask whether a haematology appointment is appropriate and what result would change the monitoring plan.

Call your healthcare team if you develop persistent bone or back pain, repeated infections, unusual bleeding, increasing tiredness, swelling, reduced urine or strong thirst. Get urgent assessment for sudden weakness, confusion, severe pain, or new loss of bladder or bowel control. Do not wait for a routine monitoring visit when symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening.
