MGUS medical term: what it means

The full name is monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance. Monoclonal refers to a protein made by a group of similar plasma cells, and gammopathy describes an abnormality involving antibody proteins. MGUS is not the same as multiple myeloma, but clinicians follow it because plasma-cell changes can sometimes evolve.

Many people learn they have MGUS after blood tests for another reason. The finding is interpreted alongside blood counts, kidney tests, calcium, protein measurements and symptoms. One result does not describe the whole picture.

Arrange the follow-up recommended by your clinician and keep a record of test dates and results. Monitoring may include repeat blood and urine tests and a review of new symptoms. Do not start supplements or stop prescribed medicines because of the term alone; some products can affect kidneys or laboratory results.
