Strep throat is caused by specific bacteria, while many sore throats are viral. Metronidazole targets certain bacteria and parasites, but it is not a routine first choice for ordinary streptococcal throat infection. Tonsillitis can have several causes, so symptoms alone may not identify the germ.

A sore throat, fever, and swollen glands can occur with strep throat. Cough, runny nose, or hoarseness may point toward a viral illness, but only an examination and suitable testing can guide treatment.

Arrange a GP consultation if strep throat is suspected, especially with fever, painful swallowing, or swollen glands without typical cold symptoms. Use the prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed if one is recommended. Do not use metronidazole left over from another illness or substitute it for an advised antibiotic treatment.
