What should you know about metronidazole for skin abscess?

A skin abscess is a pocket of infected material beneath the skin. Metronidazole targets certain bacteria that grow without oxygen, so it may be considered only when the suspected infection fits that pattern or when another treatment plan includes it. It does not treat every cause of a boil, and an antibiotic cannot reliably empty a closed pocket.

The clinician may examine the lump, surrounding redness, tenderness, and any drainage. They may also consider whether the problem is a boil, inflamed cyst, or another skin lump.

Do not start leftover metronidazole or share someone else’s prescription. If it has been prescribed, take it exactly as directed and mention other medicines, pregnancy, allergies, and liver problems. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for the interval advised by your prescriber because metronidazole can interact with it.

Keep the area clean and covered if it is draining. Do not squeeze, pierce, or cut the lump at home. A clinician may recommend antibiotics for skin infection or a minor abscess drainage procedure.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if the lump is enlarging, very painful, hot, surrounded by spreading redness, or producing pus. Seek urgent help for fever, chills, faintness, confusion, rapidly worsening swelling, or an abscess near the eye, nose, genitals, or spine.

Ask whether the lump needs drainage, which organisms the treatment is intended to cover, how to care for the wound, and what changes should trigger a review.
