What should you know about metastatic squamous cell skin cancer?

Squamous cell skin cancer begins in cells in the outer layers of skin. Metastatic disease means cancer cells have reached lymph nodes or another body site. The team may use examination, a biopsy and scans to confirm the extent and identify areas that need treatment. A changing skin lesion alone does not establish spread; diagnosis depends on clinical assessment and testing.

The treatment plan may focus on removing a reachable tumour, treating a specific area with radiotherapy, or using immunotherapy when disease cannot be managed adequately with local treatment. The choice also considers the location of a tumour near the eye, ear, nose, mouth, nerves or other structures.

Ask for the pathology result, scan findings and treatment goal in clear language. Tell the team about previous skin cancers, immune conditions, organ problems, medicines and any difficulty eating, seeing, hearing, moving or sleeping. Protect treated skin as advised, avoid picking or irritating lesions, and keep appointments for wound or treatment review.

Tumour removal surgery may be suitable when a lesion can be removed safely. Radiotherapy can treat a selected area, while immunotherapy works through the immune system and may be discussed for more extensive disease. Side effects depend on the treatment and the body area involved.

Contact the treating team promptly for bleeding that will not stop, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, fever, severe pain, new facial weakness, vision change, trouble swallowing or breathing. A new lump near the original lesion or in a lymph-node area should be examined, especially when it persists or changes.
