What should you know about metastatic prostate cancer survival?

Metastatic prostate cancer has moved from the prostate to another part of the body. Bone is a frequent site, but lymph nodes or other organs may also be involved. Doctors assess scans, tumour features, prostate-specific antigen trends, symptoms and general health together. These details help describe the cancer’s behaviour, choose treatment and review how well it is responding; a single test cannot predict an individual future.

Many people receive care in phases. Hormone-directed treatment may slow signals that prostate cancer uses to grow, while other medicines, radiotherapy or targeted radioisotope therapy may address cancer in particular areas. Bone-strengthening therapy can be considered when bone involvement creates a risk of pain or weakening.

Bring scan reports, pathology information, medicine lists and a record of pain, urinary changes, tiredness and appetite. Ask whether the cancer is present in bone, lymph nodes or organs, what the treatment goal is, and how response will be monitored. Treatment may involve oncology, urology, radiotherapy and supportive-care teams. Options such as radiotherapy, brachytherapy or targeted radioisotope therapy depend on the sites involved and earlier treatment.

Supportive care is appropriate alongside cancer treatment. It can address pain, sleep, movement, mood, nutrition and practical needs. Difficulty passing urine should be reported because urinary blockage can require prompt assessment.

Contact the treating team urgently for new leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe or rapidly worsening back pain, inability to pass urine, confusion, or breathlessness. These symptoms can signal pressure on the spinal cord, urinary obstruction or another complication that needs immediate assessment. Fever during treatment, uncontrolled vomiting or sudden severe pain also warrants same-day advice.

Ask which areas are affected, what the immediate treatment aim is, how response will be checked, which side effects need a call, and whether bone-strengthening treatment or symptom-focused care should be added.
