What should you know about metastatic cancer life expectancy?

Metastatic cancer means that cancer has travelled from where it began to another part of the body. Different cancers behave differently, and even people with the same cancer can have different patterns of spread and responses to treatment. Doctors consider the original cancer, affected organs, tumour features, symptoms, general health, and how the disease changes over time.

An outlook is an informed clinical estimate, not a fixed timetable. Tests and treatment response can change the assessment. Ask the oncologist to explain the likely range in plain language, what is uncertain, and which signs would change the plan. Avoid comparing an individual situation with stories found online because the underlying cancers may not be comparable.

Bring scan reports, pathology information, medicine lists, and a trusted person to appointments. Ask whether treatment is intended to shrink or control the cancer, prevent complications, relieve symptoms, or support more than one goal. Options may include chemotherapy, a clinical trial when suitable, and palliative care alongside cancer treatment. Palliative care focuses on comfort, function, communication, and practical support; it does not mean that cancer treatment must stop.

A second opinion can clarify pathology, treatment choices, and the goals of care. Keep a record of pain, appetite, breathing, sleep, mood, and daily activities so the team can respond to changes.

Contact the care team promptly for worsening pain, new breathlessness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, confusion, fever, bleeding, or a sudden decline in daily function. Emergency symptoms include severe breathing difficulty, fainting, new weakness, seizure, severe chest pain, or inability to pass urine. The team can provide a specific after-hours plan.
