What should you know about mesothelioma PET CT?

PET CT uses a small amount of a radioactive tracer with computed tomography. Areas that take up more tracer may appear more active, while CT shows their position and structure. In mesothelioma, the combination can help clinicians assess the pleural lining, nearby tissues, lymph nodes, and possible areas elsewhere in the body.

Inflammation and infection can also look active on PET, and some tumours show less tracer uptake. For that reason, the report is considered alongside symptoms, examination, CT or MRI findings, and tissue results. A bright area is not by itself proof of cancer, and a quiet area does not answer every diagnostic question.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and blood sugar. Tell staff if you have diabetes, may be pregnant, are breastfeeding, have difficulty lying still, or have recently received another tracer-based scan. Wear comfortable clothing and expect to rest quietly after the tracer is given before imaging begins.

Ask when and how the report will be explained. The result may help plan biopsy, surgery, radiation, medicines, or symptom support, but your team will connect it with the full clinical picture. A PET CT itself does not usually require urgent follow-up, but seek immediate help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, chest pain, or a serious allergic-type reaction after the appointment. Contact the care team about new or worsening breathlessness, fever, uncontrolled pain, or confusion while awaiting results.
