What should you know about mesothelioma not caused by asbestos?

Mesothelioma is a cancer of a lining, often the pleura around the lungs. Asbestos is a recognised risk factor, but a person may have no known exposure, may not remember an exposure, or may have encountered fibres indirectly. Not knowing the cause does not rule out mesothelioma and does not make the diagnosis less real.

Symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness, persistent cough, fluid around the lung, or fatigue can have many causes. A biopsy reviewed with imaging helps establish what the abnormal tissue is. Your team may ask about work, home renovations, household contacts, and places where you lived, while recognising that an exposure history may remain unclear.

Options may include medicines, radiation, procedures, and symptom-focused care; the plan depends on the tumour and your health, not on proving an exposure.
