What should you know about mesothelioma non small cell lung cancer?

Short answer
Mesothelioma and non-small cell lung cancer are different cancers, and pathology determines which diagnosis guides treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key test
- Biopsy reviewed by a pathologist
- Main distinction
- Lung tissue versus the lining around the lung
How they differ
Mesothelioma usually begins in a thin lining around an organ, commonly the pleura around the lungs. Non-small cell lung cancer begins in lung tissue and includes types such as adenocarcinoma. Symptoms can overlap, including cough, chest discomfort, breathlessness, tiredness, and unintentional weight loss, so symptoms alone cannot identify the cancer type.
Doctors may combine scans, bronchoscopy or another procedure, and a biopsy examined by a pathologist. The report may describe the cell type and biomarkers that help select treatment. A second pathology review can be discussed when the diagnosis or origin remains uncertain.
How treatment planning starts
Ask for the pathology report and the scan findings, then confirm whether the cancer began in the lung or its surrounding lining. Treatment may involve surgery, radiation, medicines, or a combination, depending on location, spread, general health, and test results. Lung lobectomy removes one lung lobe in selected situations; stereotactic body radiotherapy delivers focused radiation in carefully planned sessions. Immunotherapy or targeted therapy may be options when the tumour and health assessment support them.
Discuss the purpose of each proposed treatment, expected effects, and alternatives with the treating team. You can read about [Lung Lobectomy](/treatments/surgical-oncology/lung-lobectomy/) and [Targeted Therapy](/treatments/systemic-therapy/targeted-therapy/).
When symptoms need prompt attention
Get urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue lips, fainting, new confusion, or coughing up significant blood. Tell the cancer team promptly about fever, chest pain that is new or intense, inability to drink, or a sudden decline in activity. These symptoms need assessment regardless of which cancer type is suspected.
Questions to ask
Where did the cancer start? What does the biopsy show? Were biomarker tests completed? What is the purpose of each scan? Which treatment is intended to control the tumour, relieve symptoms, or both?
Questions people ask
Can symptoms distinguish the two cancers?
No. Their symptoms can overlap, so tissue examination and imaging are needed to establish the diagnosis.
Why are biomarker tests discussed?
Some non-small cell lung cancers have features that may help doctors consider targeted medicines or immunotherapy.
