What should you know about a menstrual TENS unit?

TENS uses transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation: adhesive electrodes deliver a tingling signal through the skin. This can influence pain processing and may make lower abdominal or back cramps easier to manage. It does not treat the reason for unusually painful periods, such as endometriosis, fibroids, infection, or pregnancy-related problems. Relief varies, and a device should complement—not replace—assessment when symptoms are new, severe, or changing.

Follow the device instructions and start at a low, comfortable setting. Place pads on clean, dry skin around the lower abdomen or back as directed, never on broken skin. Keep the unit off while sleeping, bathing, driving, or exercising where the pads could shift. Do not place electrodes across the abdomen during pregnancy unless a qualified clinician has given specific instructions. Stop for burning, a rash, dizziness, or increased pain. Get urgent medical care for severe pelvic pain with fainting, heavy bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting, or possible pregnancy. Arrange an appointment if cramps suddenly become much worse, occur between periods, start after sex, or interfere with normal activities despite usual measures. New pain with unusual discharge or pain when passing urine also deserves assessment. A TENS unit should not delay care for these symptoms.

Ask whether TENS fits your symptoms, where the pads should sit, and which settings are reasonable. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, an implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, skin problems, or a seizure history.
