Short answer

At 45, changing periods, hot flushes, night sweats, sleep difficulty, mood changes, and vaginal dryness may signal perimenopause, but other causes should be considered.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Signs that can appear

Perimenopause is the transition before menopause. Periods may become closer together, farther apart, lighter, or heavier. You may notice heat episodes, sweating during sleep, headaches, breast tenderness, reduced concentration, irritability, or changes in sexual comfort. Some people have several symptoms, while others notice mainly a change in bleeding.

Menopause is confirmed after periods have stopped for twelve consecutive months when no other explanation is present. A period change at 45 can fit this transition, but pregnancy, thyroid problems, medicines, stress, and other conditions can also alter bleeding or symptoms.

How to prepare for an assessment

Record bleeding dates and flow changes, flushes, sleep, mood, headaches, medicines, and contraception. Note whether symptoms affect work, exercise, relationships, or rest. Wear removable layers, keep a cool drink nearby, and protect sleep with a regular routine while you decide what support you need.

Make an appointment if symptoms are bothersome or you want to discuss contraception, bone health, mood, or treatment choices. A clinician may use your history and examination; tests are not always needed to identify the transition, depending on your circumstances.

Bleeding and other warning signs

Seek medical advice for very heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, new pelvic pain, or bleeding after periods have stopped. Arrange prompt care for severe headache, chest pain, fainting, or new neurological symptoms. Do not assume every symptom at 45 is menopause.

Questions to ask

Do my bleeding pattern and symptoms fit perimenopause? Could a medicine or another condition be contributing? Do I still need contraception? Which treatment and lifestyle options match my health history? What bleeding pattern should trigger a review?

Questions people ask

Can menopause signs start at 45?

Yes. Perimenopause commonly begins before periods stop, and symptoms can start around this age.

Does an irregular period prove menopause?

No. Other causes can change bleeding, so a clinician may need to assess the pattern and context.
