Menopause period heavy bleeding: what to know

Hormone changes can make ovulation irregular, which may lead to bleeding that is heavier, longer, or less predictable than before. A period that returns after a long gap can also feel unexpectedly heavy.

Bleeding can have other causes, including growths in the uterus, changes to the uterine lining, infection, medication effects, or pregnancy-related problems. Bleeding after menopause—after periods have stopped for a full year—needs prompt assessment rather than being assumed to be a normal menopause symptom.

Record when the bleeding starts, how long it lasts, how often you change pads or tampons, and whether you pass clots or feel tired or breathless. Share your medicines, contraception, and any chance of pregnancy with the clinician.

A clinician may examine you and decide whether you need blood tests or imaging. Treatment depends on the cause and may include medicine, hormone treatment, or a procedure. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice.

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is soaking through protection repeatedly, you feel faint or unusually weak, or you have shortness of breath, chest discomfort, severe pelvic pain, or possible pregnancy. Bleeding after menopause also warrants prompt medical review.
