Menopause and facial hair

Short answer
Facial hair can become coarser or more noticeable around menopause as hormone balance changes, and a sudden marked change should be medically assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical change
- Chin, upper-lip, or jaw hair may become coarser or more visible.
- Concerning pattern
- Sudden rapid growth with voice, acne, scalp-hair, or cycle changes.
Why facial hair may change
During menopause, lower oestrogen can make the relative effect of existing androgens more noticeable. Hair on the chin, upper lip, or jaw may grow thicker, while scalp hair may become finer. This pattern can occur as part of [Menopause](/conditions/menopause/), but facial hair is not specific to it. Polycystic ovary syndrome, medicines, adrenal or ovarian conditions, and other hormone changes can also contribute.
Notice the timing and pace of change, and whether it appears with acne, scalp hair loss, voice deepening, increased muscle, or changes in periods. These associated features help a clinician decide whether hormone testing is useful.
Hair removal choices
Shaving, trimming, threading, waxing, and depilatory products are options; patch-test products and follow their instructions because irritated facial skin can burn or become inflamed. Laser treatment and electrolysis require a qualified practitioner and may need repeated sessions. Discuss medicines that slow hair growth with a clinician, particularly if you have other medical conditions or take regular medicines.
Choose the method that fits your skin, hair colour, budget, and comfort. Hair removal changes the visible hair, not the hormone signal causing growth, so new growth can occur.
When to seek care
Arrange a review if facial hair appears suddenly, grows rapidly, or comes with severe acne, scalp hair loss, voice change, or irregular bleeding. Seek urgent care for sudden facial weakness, swelling, or breathing difficulty. A clinician can assess the pattern and check for causes beyond normal menopausal change.
Questions for your doctor
Does my hair pattern fit menopause, or should we check another hormone cause? Which removal method suits my skin? Could any medicine be contributing, and what changes should I report?

Questions people ask
Does shaving make menopause facial hair grow back thicker?
No. Shaving cuts hair at the surface and does not change its growth rate or thickness, although regrowth can feel blunt.
Should I see a doctor for menopause facial hair?
Discuss gradual changes if they concern you; seek review promptly for sudden rapid growth or other hormone-related changes.
