Menopause and tension headaches: what to know

Short answer
Menopause may coincide with tension headaches through sleep disruption, stress and hormonal change, but a new headache pattern should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it may mean
A tension headache often feels like pressure or a tight band on both sides of the head, sometimes with tenderness in the scalp, neck or shoulders. It may follow poor sleep, dehydration, skipped meals, prolonged screen posture or jaw clenching. Hot flushes, changing cycles and emotional strain can make an existing pattern more noticeable. A headache can also have another cause, and the symptom alone does not identify it. Record its onset, location, severity, associated symptoms, medicines and whether movement changes it. A persistent or changing pattern merits a GP Consultation.
What you can do
Drink regularly, eat at predictable times and take screen breaks that allow your neck and shoulders to relax. Gentle neck movement, heat over tight muscles and paced breathing may ease muscle tension. Keep a headache diary and follow the label or professional advice for any pain medicine; frequent use can itself perpetuate headaches. Consider whether flushes, sleep loss, vision strain or jaw clenching precede attacks. Arrange a GP Consultation if self-care is not helping, the headaches recur often or you need a tailored prevention plan.
When to seek care
Seek emergency care for a sudden, extremely severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, seizure, fainting, loss of vision, fever with a stiff neck, or a headache after a serious head injury. Get prompt medical advice for a new headache with pregnancy, cancer, immune suppression, persistent vomiting or a clear change from your usual pattern.
Questions for your doctor
Does this pattern fit a tension headache? Could my medicines, blood pressure, vision or menopause symptoms contribute? Which treatment is safe for me, and what changes should prompt urgent care?
