Short answer

Menopause may make skin drier and more reactive, but new sun sensitivity also needs a medication and skin-condition review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible pattern
Burning, redness, itching or rash on exposed skin
First step
Reduce exposure and review recent medicines and products
Avoid
Stopping prescribed treatment without medical advice

What the change can mean

Hormonal changes can alter the skin barrier. When skin loses moisture, heat, sweat, wind and ultraviolet exposure may feel more irritating. Sun sensitivity can appear as burning, redness, itching, a rash or darkening after daylight exposure. Menopause itself is not the only possible explanation. A new medicine, topical product or underlying rash can make light reactions more noticeable. Drug rash is one possible cause when a rash begins after starting or changing a medicine.

Notice whether symptoms occur only on exposed areas, how quickly they begin, and whether they continue indoors near bright windows. These details help separate ordinary irritation from a light-triggered reaction.

Ways to reduce irritation

Use shade, closely woven clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin. Reapply sunscreen according to its label, especially after sweating or washing. Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and moisturiser, and avoid introducing several new actives while the skin is unsettled. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without checking with the prescriber; ask whether any medicine or supplement can increase light sensitivity. A clinician can also assess whether a calming topical treatment is suitable.

When to seek care

Arrange a clinical review if the reaction is new, recurring, spreading beyond sun-exposed skin, blistering, painful or not settling after avoiding the trigger. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, wheezing, trouble breathing, faintness, extensive blistering or skin peeling. Those features can signal a serious reaction and should not be managed with sun avoidance alone.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which medicines, supplements or skincare products could be contributing; whether the pattern fits sun sensitivity or another rash; what sunscreen and moisturiser suit your skin; and whether testing or a medication change is needed.
