What pink discharge can mean

Pink discharge often reflects a small amount of blood diluted by normal vaginal fluid. During perimenopause, hormone changes can make bleeding irregular, so spotting may appear pink, brown, or red between periods. Menopause is reached after twelve months without a menstrual period; any new bleeding after that point is called postmenopausal bleeding.

Lower oestrogen after menopause can thin and dry the vaginal tissues. This may lead to irritation or bleeding after sex, during an examination, or from minor friction. Infection, cervical or uterine polyps, some medicines, and thickening or other changes in the womb lining can also cause bleeding. Pink discharge alone cannot identify the cause.

What to do next

If you have gone twelve months without a period, arrange a medical appointment even if the bleeding is faint, happens once, or has stopped. A clinician may ask about your menstrual history, medicines, hormone treatment, sexual activity, pain, and discharge, then examine the vagina and cervix. Further tests may be suggested based on what they find.

Record when the discharge started, its colour and amount, whether it followed sex, and any odour, itching, pelvic pain, or urinary symptoms. Use a pad while you monitor it so the amount is easier to judge. Do not douche or put perfumed products inside the vagina.

When to seek care urgently

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy or persistent, you feel faint or weak, you have severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, or you may be pregnant. Contact a clinician promptly for repeated bleeding, bleeding after sex, new foul-smelling discharge, or discharge with significant itching or burning. These symptoms need assessment because appearance alone cannot distinguish irritation from infection or a problem higher in the reproductive tract.
