Menopause and chills: what should you know?

Short answer
Chills can follow a menopause-related hot flush as the body cools, but persistent chills, fever or feeling acutely unwell need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How chills can happen
A hot flush can be followed by sweating and rapid cooling of the skin, leaving you shivery or cold. Temperature sensitivity, sleep loss and anxiety may make the sensation more noticeable. Chills may also occur without a flush, so the timing and other symptoms are useful clues.
Menopause does not explain every episode. Infection, thyroid problems, low blood sugar, medication effects or environmental cold can also cause chills. Note whether you have fever, cough, urinary symptoms, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, a rash or unusual tiredness, and tell a clinician if the episodes are new or persistent.
What may help
Dress in light layers so you can adjust quickly after a flush, keep a drink nearby and use breathable bedding. A symptom diary can show links with hot flushes, night sweats, food, medicines, stress or the room temperature. Rest and fluids are sensible while you monitor a mild, brief episode.
Arrange a routine appointment if chills keep returning, disturb sleep or occur without a clear temperature change. Bring your temperature readings, medicine list and notes about periods stopped or other menopause symptoms.
When to seek urgent help
Seek urgent medical care for chills with a high fever, confusion, severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, a stiff neck, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, or a rapidly worsening illness. Prompt advice is also needed for chills with burning urination, persistent vomiting or a new rash.
Questions for your doctor
Could these episodes be linked to hot flushes or a medicine? Should I check my temperature during an episode? Do my other symptoms suggest infection or a thyroid problem, and what changes require urgent help?

Questions people ask
Can a hot flush cause chills afterward?
Yes. Sweating and rapid skin cooling can leave you shivery after a flush.
When are chills less likely to be menopause-related?
Chills with fever, infection symptoms, severe pain, confusion or a worsening illness need medical assessment rather than a menopause explanation.
