What should you know about meningioma immunohistochemistry?

After tissue is removed during a biopsy or operation, a pathologist examines its cells and may apply selected stains. These stains attach to proteins or other markers in the cells, creating patterns that support a meningioma diagnosis and help distinguish it from other tumours near the brain or its coverings.

The report may describe markers such as epithelial membrane antigen, progesterone receptor, or somatostatin receptor, alongside the tumour’s microscopic appearance. A marker result is one part of the assessment; it does not by itself describe every feature of the tumour or predict your individual outcome.

Ask the treating team to explain which stains were performed, what question each stain addressed, and whether the findings support a particular meningioma grade or subtype. Read the wording together with the main pathology diagnosis, imaging, symptoms, and the extent of removal.

Contact your clinical team promptly if you develop a new seizure, worsening weakness, a severe or rapidly changing headache, repeated vomiting, confusion, or a change in speech or vision. After a procedure, follow the discharge instructions for wound problems, fever, or fluid leakage, because these need direct assessment.
