Membranous tonsillitis

Tonsillitis inflames the tonsils and may produce white patches or a greyish membrane. A bacterial infection such as strep throat is one possibility, while viruses can cause a similar appearance. Sore throat, fever, swollen glands, bad breath, and earache may accompany it. The appearance alone cannot establish which germ is responsible.

A clinician may examine the throat and neck, assess hydration and breathing, and use a throat test when appropriate. Mention recent antibiotics, exposure to illness, and difficulty swallowing.

Rest, drink fluids in small frequent amounts, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Paracetamol may help pain or fever when suitable for you; follow the label or a clinician's advice. Do not share utensils and wash hands regularly. Antibiotic treatment should be used only when prescribed for a suspected or confirmed bacterial cause, and the course should be taken as directed.

Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have noisy or difficult breathing, rapidly increasing throat swelling, severe one-sided pain, a muffled voice, or trouble opening your mouth. Arrange a medical review for persistent fever, dehydration, worsening pain, or symptoms that do not begin to settle.
