Membrane sweep: what to expect

Your midwife or doctor discusses the procedure, checks that it is suitable, and asks for your consent. With you lying comfortably, they gently examine the cervix with gloved fingers. If the cervix is reachable and slightly open, they move a finger around the edge to separate the membranes from the cervix. This does not break the waters deliberately. You may feel pressure, stretching or a brief sharp sensation, and you can ask for the examination to stop.

Afterward, period-like cramps, pelvic soreness, irregular tightenings and a small amount of pink or brown discharge can occur. A sweep may be followed by labour, but it may also make no noticeable difference. The cervix and your individual pregnancy affect what you feel and what happens next.

Ask what the examination involves, why it is being offered, and whether another sweep or a formal induction plan would be considered. Wear a pad if you have discharge, keep fluids nearby, and arrange a calm way to rest afterward. Note the timing and strength of tightenings so you can recognise a changing pattern. Do not put anything in the vagina or have sex if your maternity team has advised against it.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fever, feeling very unwell, or fluid that may be your waters. Seek urgent advice if your baby’s movements are reduced or different from the pattern your team has told you to expect. Call for guidance if contractions become regular and difficult to manage, or if you are unsure whether discharge is normal.
