Membrane sweep to induce labour: how it fits

During the examination, a clinician uses a finger to sweep around the inside edge of the cervix and separate the membranes from the lower uterus. This may encourage cervical change and the natural processes associated with labour. It is different from methods that use medication or a device to soften the cervix or start contractions.

A sweep may be offered when the benefits of labour starting are being discussed, such as when pregnancy has progressed or there is another clinical reason to plan birth. Whether it is suitable depends on the position of the placenta, the state of the waters, cervical access, and your individual care needs.

Ask why induction is being considered, what the sweep is intended to achieve, and what alternatives exist. You can discuss consent, discomfort, timing, and what happens if you decline or if the sweep does not lead to labour. Make sure you know how to contact the maternity unit and when follow-up is planned.

Call your maternity team for heavy bleeding, fluid loss, severe pain, fever, reduced baby movements, or contractions that become regular and hard to manage. If the waters break, tell the unit promptly because the next steps can depend on gestation, fluid colour, and your pregnancy history.

Ask how a sweep compares with other induction methods, whether your cervix can be reached, how the baby's wellbeing will be monitored, and which step follows if labour does not begin.
