Membrane sweep symptoms: what is expected

The cervix can be sensitive after a clinician has examined it, so mild soreness or period-like cramps may occur. A small amount of pink or brown discharge may be mucus mixed with blood. Contractions can be uneven at first. These symptoms may fade, or they may become more organised as labour develops; symptoms alone cannot tell you which path will occur.

Some people notice no clear change after the examination. That does not mean anything is wrong, and it does not establish whether the sweep will have an effect. Follow the individual advice from your maternity team about monitoring and review.

Use a pad if you need to observe discharge or fluid, note when contractions begin and how their pattern changes, and drink fluids and rest as comfortable. Continue paying attention to your baby's usual movements. Keep the number for your maternity unit available so you can describe what you are experiencing.

Seek maternity advice promptly for heavy bleeding, a gush or ongoing leak of fluid, severe or worsening pain, fever, reduced baby movements, or contractions that become regular and difficult to manage. Contact the unit if you are unsure whether fluid is amniotic fluid or discharge, because the distinction may need an assessment.
