Membrane sweep risks: what to know

During a sweep, a clinician separates the membranes around the baby from the cervix with a finger. Pressure can feel uncomfortable, especially if the cervix is closed or sensitive. Mild cramps, pelvic pressure, a small amount of blood-streaked mucus, and contractions that do not settle into a pattern can occur afterwards. These effects do not confirm that labour has started.

A sweep does not suit every pregnancy. Your maternity team may avoid it or adapt the plan if there is unexplained bleeding, the placenta is blocking the cervix, or the waters have already broken. The decision depends on your examination and pregnancy history.

Ask what the examination will involve, whether your cervix can be reached, and what bleeding or contractions your team considers expected. You can ask the clinician to stop if the procedure is too uncomfortable. Afterward, rest if needed, use a pad to observe fluid or bleeding, and keep your maternity contact details close. Do not put anything into the vagina after your waters break unless your clinician advises it.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or continuing abdominal pain, a gush or ongoing leaking of fluid, fever, feeling unwell, or contractions that become regular and difficult to manage. Seek urgent help if you notice reduced baby movements or anything that feels seriously wrong. Your team can tell you where to attend based on your gestation and local maternity pathway.

Ask why a sweep is being offered now, what alternatives are available, how your cervix affects the examination, and which symptoms should prompt a call. You may also want to discuss what happens if the sweep does not lead to labour.
