Membrane sweep effectiveness

During a sweep, a clinician moves a finger around the cervix to separate the amniotic sac membranes from the lower uterus. This can encourage local hormone activity and may make contractions more likely. The response depends partly on whether the cervix is soft, shortened, and beginning to open. A cervix that is still closed or positioned high may make the sweep difficult and less likely to trigger a clear change.

A sweep is different from formal induction of labour. It may be offered as a step before medicines or other methods, and it can be repeated when clinically suitable. Even when it does not start labour, it may provide information about cervical change.

Ask what your clinician expects from the examination and whether your cervix can be reached. You can discuss another appointment, a formal induction plan, or waiting for labour if the sweep has no noticeable effect. Afterward, mild cramping, irregular contractions, or a small amount of blood-streaked mucus can occur. Rest, drink fluids, and monitor the pattern of any contractions according to the advice from your maternity team.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, leaking fluid, fever, or contractions that become regular and difficult to manage. Seek urgent assessment if your baby is moving less than usual or if you feel seriously unwell. Follow your local maternity service instructions if they give a different contact route.
