What should you know about membrane sweep during pregnancy?

After explaining the procedure and obtaining consent, a clinician performs a vaginal examination and gently moves a gloved finger around the cervix when it can be reached. The aim is to separate the membranes from the lower uterus. It does not involve cutting the cervix or routinely breaking the waters.

The examination can feel uncomfortable or painful for some people. Spotting, period-like cramps and irregular tightenings may occur afterward, while some people notice no change. A sweep may be repeated or followed by another birth-planning option, depending on the cervix, pregnancy stage and clinical reason.

Ask why the sweep is being offered, what alternatives exist and what the clinician expects to learn from the examination. You can ask to pause or stop, and you can discuss comfort measures and privacy. Tell the team about bleeding, leaking fluid, placenta concerns, infection symptoms or previous cervical procedures.
