How the structures involved in Melasma differ from normal

Short answer

On white skin, melasma may appear as flat tan or brown facial patches, and careful diagnosis helps guide gentle treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it can appear

Lighter skin can make brown or grey-brown pigment easier to notice, particularly across the cheeks, forehead, nose, or upper lip. Melasma is usually flat and may form fairly balanced patches, but appearance alone cannot confirm it. Sun exposure, visible light, heat, hormonal shifts, and skin irritation can all influence colour. Freckles, sun-damaged skin, post-inflammatory marks, and some medicines may resemble melasma, which is why a clinician may inspect the area closely.

Protect and treat thoughtfully

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen consistently, add a hat when outdoors, and avoid intentional tanning. Choose products that do not sting, since irritation can leave darker marks even on lighter skin. Do not layer several strong pigment products without advice. Depending on the depth and pattern, a dermatologist may discuss prescription care or procedures such as Chemical Peel, Microneedling, Skin Brightening Treatment, or Laser Toning. Treatment is often gradual and needs monitoring for irritation or uneven colour.

Signs for a skin check

Have a new or uncertain patch assessed if it is scaly, raised, bleeding, tender, very itchy, or changing in shape or colour. Seek prompt advice for a sore that fails to heal or a spot unlike the surrounding patches. Arrange review if pigmentation worsens after a product or procedure, because the treatment plan may need to change.

What to ask

Ask how confident the diagnosis is, whether the pigment is mainly superficial or deeper, and which daily sunscreen and active ingredients are appropriate. Discuss pregnancy, hormonal treatment, recent procedures, and any history of eczema or product reactions before choosing a treatment.

Questions people ask

Does white skin rule out melasma?

No. Melasma can affect people with many skin tones, including lighter skin.

Can a strong product clear it faster?

Not necessarily. Irritation may make facial pigmentation more noticeable.
