What should you know about melasma on thigh?

How the structures involved in Melasma differ from normal

Short answer

A dark patch on the thigh should be assessed before calling it melasma, because friction, inflammation and other pigment conditions can look similar.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why location changes the assessment

Melasma is most often discussed as facial pigment, so a thigh patch deserves careful examination rather than a label based only on colour. A flat brown or grey-brown area may follow friction, a healed rash, hair removal, an ingrown hair or another pigment process. Texture, itch, scale, tenderness and the timing of change help narrow the possibilities.

Tight clothing, repeated rubbing and inflammation can make pigment persist. Sun exposure may also deepen exposed areas. Do not use facial bleaching products on the thigh without advice, especially on irritated or broken skin.

Steps while arranging advice

Reduce rubbing with comfortable clothing, avoid picking and pause any product that burns. Wash gently and moisturise if the skin is dry. Protect the area from sunlight when exposed. A clinician can decide whether the mark is melasma or another condition and choose an appropriate topical plan.

After diagnosis, options may include prescribed pigment care or selected procedures such as a chemical peel, microneedling, laser toning or skin-brightening treatment. Procedures on body skin need individual assessment because inflammation can deepen pigment. See [Melasma](/conditions/melasma/) and [Uneven Skin Tone](/symptoms/uneven-skin-tone/) for related information.

When to seek an examination

Arrange a review for a new, unexplained or persistent thigh patch, particularly if it itches, scales, hurts, becomes thickened or changes. Seek prompt care if it grows quickly, bleeds, crusts, ulcerates or becomes markedly inflamed. After a procedure, contact the clinic for blistering, severe pain, spreading redness or ongoing burning. These features need assessment rather than stronger pigment products.

Questions for your appointment

Ask what diagnoses fit the location and surface, whether friction or a previous rash is involved, and whether any medicine or product could be contributing. Ask which treatment is safe for body skin, how to protect the area, and what change should trigger an earlier review.

Questions people ask

Is every dark thigh patch melasma?

No. Friction, inflammation, healed skin injury and other pigment conditions can resemble melasma, so examination is useful.

Should I use a peel on a thigh patch?

Only after a clinician confirms the diagnosis and assesses the skin, since irritation from a peel can deepen or prolong pigmentation.
