Melasma on the Jawline: What to Know

Jawline melasma may form a fairly even patch on both sides or blend with pigment on the cheeks and lower face. Sunlight, visible light, heat, hormonal shifts, and irritation can make it more noticeable. Acne, shaving, hair-removal products, and contact dermatitis can also leave dark marks along the jaw. The absence of pain or scale supports a pigment concern, but does not identify its cause by itself.

Apply sun protection to the face and jaw every morning and reapply when outdoors. Use a mild cleanser, moisturiser, and products that do not sting. Avoid aggressive scrubbing after shaving or hair removal. Depending on the diagnosis and skin sensitivity, a dermatologist may discuss topical care or procedures such as chemical peel, microneedling, skin brightening treatment, or laser toning. Changes usually need steady care rather than rapid switching between products.

Seek a dermatology review if the patch changes quickly, becomes raised, crusted, scaly, painful, itchy, or bleeds, or if it is sharply different from nearby pigmentation. A spot that repeatedly breaks down or fails to heal needs prompt evaluation. These signs are not characteristic of simple melasma and should not be managed only with cosmetic products.

Ask whether the pattern is melasma or post-inflammatory pigment, whether shaving or products are contributing, and which treatment is safest for the jawline.
