Melasma on Fair Skin: What to Know

Melasma is a pigment condition in which pigment-producing cells make more melanin in selected areas. On fair skin, the contrast may be noticeable even when patches are subtle. The face is a common site, especially the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and jawline, although other exposed areas can change. This appearance can resemble other causes of dark patches or sun-damaged skin, so an examination helps confirm the diagnosis.

Use broad-spectrum sun protection, shade, and a hat when outdoors; visible light can also aggravate facial pigmentation. Choose a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, and stop products that sting or cause peeling. A dermatologist may discuss prescription pigment treatments or procedures such as a chemical peel, microneedling, skin brightening treatment, or laser toning. Treatment needs careful selection because irritation can deepen pigmentation, and maintenance is often needed.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the patch is new, rapidly changing, one-sided, raised, scaly, bleeding, painful, or itchy, or if it differs from your other marks. Seek prompt care for a bleeding or ulcerated spot that does not heal. These features are not typical of uncomplicated melasma and deserve direct examination.
