What should you know about melasma near the eyes?

Pigment may appear on the upper cheek, temples, brow area, or eyelids and can look more obvious after sun or heat exposure. Melasma is generally flat and does not cause the eye itself to change colour. Dark circles, eczema, contact irritation, medication effects, and other pigment changes can look similar. A clinician will consider the distribution and any itching, swelling, scaling, or recent cosmetic use.

Keep skincare simple: cleanse gently, moisturise, avoid rubbing, and use suitable sun protection around—but not inside—the eyes. Sunglasses and shade can reduce exposure. Do not place acids, bleaching mixtures, or procedure products on the eyelids without professional instructions. A dermatologist may consider a carefully selected skin brightening treatment; chemical peel, microneedling, and laser toning require special caution close to the eyes.

Seek prompt medical review for sudden swelling, pain, redness, vision change, marked itch, a bleeding or crusted spot, or pigment that changes quickly. A new mark on one eyelid also merits assessment, especially if it is different from the other side. Do not assume every dark area near the eye is melasma.

Ask which part of the skin is involved, whether an allergy or eye-area dermatitis is possible, and which products are safe near the eyelids. Discuss sun protection, treatment placement, expected irritation, and what symptoms should lead you to stop a product.
