Melasma on the forehead: what to know

Short answer
Melasma on the forehead usually appears as flat uneven brown pigmentation that can deepen with light exposure, heat, or irritation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the forehead can be involved
Forehead melasma often forms broad or irregular patches that may extend toward the temples or hairline. It can be brown, grey-brown, or slightly darker than the surrounding skin, without a raised edge. Sunlight, visible light, heat, hormonal influences, and inflammation can all affect how noticeable it becomes.
A forehead mark is not automatically melasma. A clinician can compare its appearance with Melasma, Sun-Damaged Skin, Dark Patches On Skin, and Uneven Skin Tone, while checking for scale, itch, a new product, or a changing mole-like feature.
How to care for the forehead
Use broad-spectrum sunscreen across the forehead and hairline, and add a hat or shade outdoors. Reapply as directed during extended outdoor time. Wash gently, moisturise, and avoid picking, abrasive scrubs, and products that sting. Hair products, headwear, or sweat that repeatedly irritate the hairline may deserve attention.
If the colour persists, a dermatologist can tailor a plan. Skin Brightening Treatment, Chemical Peel, Microneedling, or Laser Toning may be considered for selected patients, but irritation can deepen pigment, so treatment should be introduced carefully.
When to seek care
Have a forehead patch assessed if it grows quickly, becomes raised, crusted, scaly, painful, itchy, or bleeds, or if it is clearly different from nearby patches. Seek prompt care for a severe reaction after a product or procedure. A routine dermatology review can confirm the pattern before treatment.
Questions for your dermatologist
Does the forehead pattern fit melasma? Could hair products or irritation be contributing? Which sunscreen should reach the hairline? What treatment fits my skin tone, and how will we reduce the chance of post-treatment darkening?

Questions people ask
Can heat make forehead melasma darker?
Heat may worsen the appearance or activity of melasma in some people, so cooling strategies and shade can complement sunscreen.
Is forehead melasma the same as a tan?
Melasma is a patterned pigment condition rather than an even tan, and a clinician can distinguish it from other causes of darkening.
